The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said that the strike in the long
running dispute with the Post Office went ahead following the rejection
of a union proposal for a structured period of negotiations which would
have avoided the Christmas strike action. The union offered to suspend
strike action in exchange for the company suspending its Post Office
closure / franchising programme in order for meaningful negotiations to
take place.
The CWU said support for the industrial action was “magnificent” with
around 3,500 post office staff taking part in the strike in the dispute
over jobs, pensions and the closure of Crown post offices. CWU general
secretary Dave Ward said: “I want our customers to understand, and I
believe they do, that our members face the prospect of losing a lot of
money in the run-up to Christmas - and that this dispute is
fundamentally about them fighting for the future of their industry and
the great British post office - in particular its presence on the high
street.”
